It's getting scary down there
severance ep 2
Hey you guys, we are back with the second episode of Severance! Happy Monday, if you have the day off, happy long weekend. That’s enough of the casualties, let’s get into it!
What Happened
So it starts with Helly getting the severance procedure and that is so gross. They cut her head open while she is awake and then you even see the brain and it’s just so gross! She seems so excited to get it, go off girl!
Cut to Mark, he’s doing some major cleaning. Everything he cleans with is Lumon brand, even the coffee is. I guess he’s also their custodian because I bet they don’t sever people just to clean! While he is cleaning, he finds the old group pictures on the desk. They have Petey in them, and he has this sense of sadness and then removes all the pictures and puts them in the back of the closet.
Helly arrives. We learn that they don’t really experience sleep in the office. They are constantly waking up in the office; weekends and time off mean nothing to them downstairs.
Irving is mad at Mark for removing the group picture and even prints out the protocol of what to do about old group photos. It seems Mark broke protocol.
Back to Helly, she is frustrated about what her work is supposed to do. They tell her to look for the “scary numbers”. Helly is so confused. She already wants to quit. Mark says that quitting would effectively end her life as she knows it. Never mind then.
The gang has a welcome party for Helly. They are rolling a ball to each other, taking turns talking about their lives. It’s a lot like a feelings farm from New Girl. Helly has no idea anything about herself. This leads us to learn that the gang things of their outside selves as “outies.” They can imagine themselves in a certain way!
They have a few facts about Helly on hand, including about how she is 30 and she is allergic to almonds!
Helly wants to write a note to herself to remember what she does at work but the elevators have this software where you can’t bring anything written into the elevator.
Mark’s turn with the ball! He’s been there for two years, and he admits to breaking protocol that morning over the pictures. He admitted to feeling sad and worried about Petey, but then Milchick (essentially HR) shuts him down when he starts asking questions.
“What if Petey died?” Don’t worry, death happens outside of Lumon. Life at Lumon protects them from death and Milchick reminds the group they need to be grateful for this.
They take the new group photo, it’s stunnnningggg! Helly is over it and she writes down “I quit!” and then runs to the elevator. She can’t obviously go up because she’s holding a note.
A boss man appears and calls Helly over, but Mark stops her and draws the blame to himself. Cutey!
Mark goes and sees the boss lady and then BOOM we are now in the real world with Mark. He is on a date, and he is kinda insufferable.
He willingly tells people he’s been severed, which I think is kinda interesting but analysis is for a different time.
We also learn that he lives in Lumon housing, so they can probably see/hear/control him!
When he leaves the date, he sees people outside protesting severance. He goes up to them and starts chirping them! He gets so mad about it, like really mad. It’s embarrassing.
He goes home and the boss lady brings him a treat as a peace offering, weird. He also has a box called “Gemma’s Crafts”, so I wonder if he once had a daughter or something,
The next day, Mark goes to work but then pulls out the end severance flyer and then he calls in sick. Boss lady is like “does he really sound sick?”. The gang thinks he’s been fired.
Mark isn’t sick, instead he goes to the address that Petey gave him. It’s a weird greenhouse. Petey is there.
Back in the office, Irving is having a day. He is irritable, and then he images black goo coming into his cubicle. So he gets a wellness check.
Helly, again, is like what the hell is going on. She is honestly asking all the questions no one wants to ask and good for her. Dylan tells Helly he thinks they are populating the sea and that their decoding is telling probes what to blow up. Irving thinks they are just cutting swear words out of movies.
Mark, now, is talking to Petey; he still isn’t sure what they’re doing down there but he is mapping out the area. Sadly, Petey is also experiencing re-adjusting illnesses so he’s getting sick.
Petey exposes that the break room is where they go when they need to be punished, and he has a recording of Mark being forced to apologize. Mark is like um where did you get that?!
In the actual break room, Irving is speaking with Christopher Walkin. Cool. Then, he goes and get’s facts about his outie. Whenever he cracks a smile or nods, he gets points taken off this arbitrary score they’re keeping.
Helly finally finds a scary number! Good for her.
Mark takes in Petey, and then Petey has a rather intense nose bleed and then his head splits and there are two of him. He kinda looks dead after this episode. We’ll have to see in the next episode.
My thoughts and feelings
Again! It was a bit boring. Maybe it’s just because it’s a thriller and it has to build up before it get’s crazzzzy.
I do think that Mark’s outie is the worst kind of man; he literally sucks.
I am excited to see what happens with Petey because I don’t know if he died or if he just was having a moment. Maybe Lumon activated a self destruct thing in his brain because he was in Lumon housing and they could see that he was there.
Anyways, okay. That was fun. Bye.
